New Theme: Selecta
Posted by SPDworks in Geeksome, SocNet (social networking), StrictlyBlogging on September 3, 2011
Today we’ve got a treat for you — a new theme called Selecta. This might be the theme you’ve been waiting for if videos or images will be the primary focus of your blog. The design, originally created by Obox Design, fuses the modern with the retro — a bold, striking color palette (in six color schemes), rounded edges, and wider-than-usual frames around content.
You Can’t “Unlike” Pages on Facebook You Didn’t “Like” on Facebook…

Confused?
To be honest, I’m starting to wonder if that wasn’t the intent of some developers working with Facebook platforms to design sites intended to integrate Facebook options with their own website pages.
Let me explain:
I’ve recently finally managed to accept about 1300 friends who were waiting to be put into my friends list, and when I did so, I found that Facebook disallowed me to “like” any new pages within its huge network. That’s INSIDE Facebook.
Still confused, well, let me see if I can help make it all make sense (at least as I see it right now.)
So finding that Facebook would no longer allow me to “like” any pages here on its network, I got to the business of figuring out just why that is.
As it turns out, Facebook associates both your total Friends list AND all your currently “like”d pages as one lump sum that cannot equal or exceed 5K. That’s a total of “like”s for pages on Facebook, plus the total “friends” you have on your list and account with Facebook. Five THOUSAND. This seems like a lot to most people, who don’t want to have that many friends, I realise that. However, when you consider that Facebook feels that your “like” ing pages makes you “friends” with the “like”d page, you can quickly rack up the same sort of problems I’m now experiencing using Facebook.
But there’s a remedy to most of this, and I can tell you that though it can be tedious, it’s not entirely out of the question to thin out your herds, so to speak.
I recently employed the help of my friends in order to determine which “like”d pages I should remove from my huge list of ’em, in order to avoid getting rid of actual people listed as my “friends” around here. I first wish to thank all the many emails and responses associated with this request, and then I’d like to add that your suggestion to lose the “like”s associated with such pages/items as those on ShoeDazzle and some others really seemed like a great idea right off the top. I could argue with some of the other suggestions, such as those associated with things like bands, and whatnot, but when you take into consideration that “like” ing a page means you like having access to that page, it’s nice to keep it right where you know it went when first you found the page and decided it was worth the “like”ing.
However, in light of the situation associated with the maximum totals for “like”d pages and friends, the most logical removal, of course, would be those items listed as sale items, and such that can’t otherwise go into some sort of “wishlist” but rather just hang out being “like”d pages.
But there’s a little probem with that, which I’ll now inform you, if you don’t already know, and beg your attention and help addressing this same problem. If you wish to know the wrinkle in Facebook’s smooth transition from online school yellowpages to full-blown web continent, read on:
There are, at the time of this writing, millions upon millions of website pages that are not directly ON Facebook, but are built to be associated WITH the platform enough that such “liked” pages result as part of one’s overall “liked” pages within their Facebook profile. As per the plan with the revamped “fan” button on Facebook, some items/people/services appearing as advertisements in the right-hand sidebar of one’s Facebook, provide the “like” button, this essentially translates into this page becoming a page they “like” in their list of “liked” pages, which is logical.
However, if one clicks on the link that takes the person to outside Facebook, and decides to then “like” the advertised product/item from the offsite page, often times, that “liked” page will then show up as one of the “liked” pages associated with the individuals account and profile. Seems reasonable (and convenient… being wired for sound with Facebook no matter WHERE YOU GO, right?
Maybe, but maybe not.
Remember back in this article where I mentioned about the limits put on Facebook account holders whereby Facebook totals both one’s Friends’ list with one’s “like”d pages list? It becomes a big problem if you want to KEEP your friends and LOSE some of the older, perhaps out-of-date/obsolete or in some cases, even removed/404 error page “like”d pages from your total list with Facebook. So what then happens when a website has the power and privelege to create its own website, but incorporate the Facebook “like” option/button into its pages, without being held to the principal that visitors that opt to “like” the page should also have the option at any time in the future to “unlike” that same page??
And here’s why I ask this:
Pages, such as those individtually advertised, posted, listed, linked items on ShoeDazzle.com and other such item specific pages, as well as many of Zynga’s game app pages that I have, at one time, “liked” pages provide no option to “unlike” them anywhere at all, and one is then forced to “like” the page, and be associated profile-wise with the page indefinitely. In the case of the Zynga pages, there’s not even a website in cache associated with these. There’s just a 404 error resulting in clicking the link.
Want to know how to get rid of the “like”d pages you CAN get rid of?
I’ll be putting that into my next note/article/blog post.
Until them, take care, and if you learn anything on the matter of “unlike”ing these “unlike”able pages, PLEASE let me know and leave a comment?
Thanks!

What does it mean to “Like” a Page or content off of Facebook?
When you click “Like” on a Page, in an advertisement, or on content off of Facebook, you are making a connection. The connection will be displayed in your profile and on your Wall and your friends may receive a News Feed story about the connection. You may be displayed on the Page you connected to, in advertisements about that Page, or in social plugins next to the content you like. The Page may also post content into your News Feed or send you messages. You may also share this connection with applications on the Facebook Platform.
You always have control over your connections. You can unlike most content immediately, manage your connections on your profile, and restrict who you share your connections with in your privacy settings.
Ummm… no, actually, you don’t.
What’s it all MEAN??

Definitions of farrago:
noun: a motley assortment of things
Definitions of forum:
noun: a public facility to meet for open discussion
noun: a public meeting or assembly for open discussion
noun: a place of assembly for the people in ancient Greece
So this is a place where SPDworks (that’s me,) can post thoughts on pretty much anything I like, to share with those that come by. It’s also a place where those that come by are welcome to share their thoughts. This is why I’ve chosen to call this space a “forum.” For it’s intended to provide a place where we can all interact and discuss issues and ideas.
I want to thank you for stopping in, and invite you to return soon, since I plan to begin filling this new space with all sorts of inks and inklings. I think I’ll start with porting all my Facebook notes to this space. There’s a little something for everyone, including those things found in my WP blog’s categories list, such as law, ethics, marketing, politics, religion, and yes, scribbles and scribing, as well as SocNet discussions. So come back and witness what comes of new news and old traditions in the Farrago Forum. Can’t wait to see you here again soon, and be sure and subscribe!

Hello gorgeous people:)
If you didn’t get the message, the director finally got back to me on this. The Serena Karlan episode of “Disappeared” will air on March 22nd at 10pm both in Eastern and Pacific standard times on the new Discovery ID channel. You can check out a sneak peek of the upcoming Serena Karlan episode here, and hop around to find out more about the missing persons case.
If that link there won’t take you there, try this one:

And if you still can’t get there from here, try popping that link in your browser or putting in the full style URL: http://investigation.discovery.com/videos/disappeared-sneak-peeks-serena-karlan.html
If you don’t have the new ID channel on your TV, get DirecTV or go find a friend that does have that channel. I’ve been watching the series since it aired on the 11th of Janurary this year, and it’s very good. Now, for those of you lovely people across the “pond,” that time means it’ll likely to put it around 2am to 3am, or so, I think. Sorry, about that, if that’s the case. Perhaps, since it’s going international, they’ll think to put it on at a more decent hour for the UK and other countries that get the channel. If not, I suppose it will eventually come into syndication. Don’t miss this episode of “Disappeared,” people. Filmed with my co-star, Christopher Baldwin, and director Chris Gidez of NBC/Universal, we did the whole shoot in about 12 hours straight last year in February in Coconut Grove, Florida. And it was SO much fun! You gotta watch this (ps…I’m the one in the black bikini on the boat) Oh and one more thing… I die at the end. It was an amazing shoot. So watch it, ok? And don’t forget to write back, call, send smoke signals, spitballs, whatever, telling me what you thought of it. But…I know it’s gonna be amazing.
Well thanks for taking time out to read all this…and don’t be a stranger (if you’re being one, at least:P ) Love to hear from you! Take care, gorgeous friends and family, and hopefully we’ll be talking more soon:)
